Israeli Prime Minister Ehud
Olmert's spokeswoman, Miri Eisin,
said Israel hopes to see the involve-
ment of countries such as Saudi
Arabia, Bahrain and Morocco. But
she played down the mandate of
such a gathering, saying Bush had
not called it an international peace
conference but a regional "meeting"
of participants who support the
idea of a two-state solution.
The purpose of the meeting, she
said, is not to come up with a con-
clusive peace agreement, but rather
to bring together those backing a
two-state solution to lend support
to the sides.
Eisin said Israel sees "eye to eye"
with the United States and the
international community on the
importance of the new Quartet
envoy, former British Prime
Minister Tony Blair, helping to
build Palestinian institutions.
The United States had been
looking to build momentum on
the Israeli-Palestinian issue but
suffered a setback when Hamas
took over Gaza. Bush portrayed the
situation among the Palestinians
as a moment of struggle between
moderates and extremists that fits
into the larger battle America is
waging in the region.
Bush said it is up to the
Palestinians to take action. "This
is a moment of clarity for all
Palestinians:' Bush said. "And now
comes the moment of choice'
Bush announced an increase in
U.S. funding for Palestinian secu-
rity reforms from $59 million to
$80 million and up to $225 million
in economic loans.
He also stressed the U.S. com-
mitment to Israel. "They should be
confident that the United States will
never abandon its commitment to
the security of Israel as a Jewish
state and homeland for the Jewish
people."
The Jewish Community Relations
Council of Metropolitan Detroit
applauded Bush's announcement.
"The United States may be the
only country able to provide the
leadership necessary to assist in
making real progress towards
peace, with security and prosper-
ity, between Israel as a Jewish state
and its Palestinian neighbors:' said
Council President Todd Mendel.
"The renewed efforts of the United
States are to be commended and
encouraged:"
He said Israel "is ready to negoti-
ate generously with a partner com-
mitted to peace."
