on the cover of the Jewish News and
even more humbling to read the
positive things that were said ("Young
Guardians," July 5, page 13).
I have spent the last seven years
trying to give a little back to our corn-
munity that has given me so much. I
will work very hard to ensure a strong
community for those who will come
after me.
I can only thank you, your staff,
the Federation, its lay leaders and its
agencies, along with the many rabbis
and teachers in our community for the
support I have received and the con-
tinued support I will need to succeed.
I am very honest and sincere when
I say this cannot be done alone; I need
the support of the community and will
do everything I can to help everyone
achieve our goals.

July 1830: The "July Revolution"
created a constitutional monarchy
in France that marked an improve-
ment in Jewish civil rights. In the
revolution's wake, French lawyer
and community leader Charles
Narcisse Oulif secured the repeal
of the Jewish oath (dating to the
time of Chalemagne, the more
Judaico demanded ritual public
humiliation for any Jew testify-
ing against a Christian in court).
Oulif later established a school
for Jewish youths and was among
the founders of a society for the
encouragement of technical edu-
cation for Jews. Both institutions
served as models for similar ones
in other cities.

July 1942: Fifty Jewish children

and their caretakers arrived at the
Catholic seminary in Nonantola,
near Bologna, Italy, having fled
from Yugoslavia. A priest, Arrigo
Beccari, housed the group there
and, upon the German invasion of
Italy in 1943, arranged local hiding
places for the children. He also
helped arrange forged documenta-
tion and an escape to Switzerland
for the group. The Gestapo
imprisoned and tortured Beccari
for several months, but he did
not betray those who had helped
him or reveal other Jews in hid-
ing. In 1964, Beccari was awarded
the title of Righteous Among the
Nations by Yad Vashem.

therapy Portuguese water dog whose
main job is working in a therapeutic
setting with oncology patients ("The
Therapy Dog:' June 28, page 26).
I have bred Portuguese water dogs
under the kennel name of Agua Viva
(registered) for 15 years. Most of my
own personal Portuguese water dogs
have been certified through Therapy
Dogs International. The Agua Viva
"porties" have acted as therapy ambas-
sadors in hospitals, nursing homes
and have also participated in elemen-
tary schools as read dogs for children
who need that little extra help with
reading skills.
This breed is a natural for a therapy
setting. The Portuguese water dog is
both intelligent and sensitive to the
therapeutic settings of hospitals, nurs-
ing homes and schools.
The Portuguese water dog is in
the working group of the American
Kennel Club. They were bred to do a
full day's work, be it retrieving fishing
nets from rough seas or giving a paw
to a child or patient in need.
