The mal-occlusion known as over-bite or over-jet

deserves attention because it can potentially interfere

ered a cosmetic concern. People with horizontal over-
jet tend to compensate by sticking out their lower jaws,
which can result in the additional problem of over-stressing the jaw joint. To
determine whether an over-jet is in need of correction, a person need only bite
down and insert his or her finger in the space between the back of their upper
front teeth and the fronts of the lower front teeth. If a finger fits in this space
there may be an excessive over-jet. This condition should be discussed with the
orthodontist. This is also a concern because it is a sign that the way the back
teeth fit together is improper.

We will discuss in a future column under-bites and vertical over-bites.

People with orthodontic problems should consult an orthodontist concerning
their need for orthodontic treatment. As a dental specialist, an orthodontist
has elected to limit his practice to this specific area or expertise and has re-
ceived additional training by an accredited dental school for advanced educa-
i tion. For those seeking orthodontic treatment, competent care will prove to be
most beneficial and less expensive in the long run. To help you evaluate your
own situation or that of your child, visit an orthodontist specialist for a consul-
tation.
