Sklar, a member of Temple Emanu-El
in Oak Park who converted to Judaism
when she was 25, was surprised that
interviewees did not speak more about
the impact of religion in coping with
their difficulties.
"There is a small section about peo-
ple's relationships with God in the part
about relationships in general: Sklar
explains. "I didn't have a huge focus on
it because a lot of the people I spoke
with didn't have a huge focus on it"

with Heartburn, finished her new book
while enjoying a summer cottage along
Lake Huron.
"I had two major surgeries while I
was writing this, but I never broke a
deadline and actually was three weeks
early in delivering the manuscript:'
Sklar says. "Writing is part of healing
for me. My body may not work as well,
but my mind is perfectly intact. I need
it as a way of distracting me."
With the book completed, Sklar is
turning her attention to a new, full-
time job in the field of medical writing.
She is a senior content specialist for
Ferndale-based Big Communications,
an organization representing the phar-
maceutical industry.
