ne in three Detroit residents
lives below the poverty line,
and that's a statistic nine
local Jewish women aren't comfortable
with.
On June 18 the women held a
fundraiser titled "A Rewarding Ladies
Night" that brought in close to 90
women and raised more than $12,000
for the Doorstep Homeless Shelter in
Highland Park.
The shelter, which has operated with
corporate and private funding in the
past, currently does not have money
for summer programs for children.
But now, the children can enjoy the
day outings to Red Oaks Water Park
in Madison Heights, Cedar Point
amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio,
the Detroit Science Center and the
Museum of African American History
in Detroit they had enjoyed in past
years. The 60-70 kids also will receive
swimsuits and clothing.
"As we send our kids to camp and
start to enjoy the summer months in
Michigan, we are just trying to make
a difference in the lives of some kids
that too often are forgotten — and to
show that Detroit is part of us:' said
Leslee Kohn, event co-organizer with
Pam Bloom, Liz Barker, Meg Cicurel,
Julie Manning, Terri Friedman, Tammi
Friedland, Jane Zeidner and Lisa
Wasserman, all of West Bloomfield.
The women hope to raise awareness
about life for homeless youth and say
they are not done generating funds for
the program.
"It's been spiraling; people are drop-
ping off clothes and checks — the
beauty is that it spreads:' Kohn said.
In the fall, they plan to get their
children, families and friends involved.
For additional information on the
fundraising efforts, call Pam Bloom at
(248) 788-3833. To make a donation
to Doorstep Shelter, contact LeShone
Hall, program director, at (313) 867-
0111 ext. 232.
