A

nswer: Dear Rona, The
idea that diet and nutrition
can positively affect the
aging process has been around for
centuries. Ayurveda, an ancient
system of health care that is native
to India, actually has a branch
named Rasayana ("rejuvenation"),
which focuses on foods that are be-
lieved to revitalize and rejuvenate.

There is also a fair body of scien-
tific evidence that suggests diet/
nutrition plays an important
1 1 .,_
role in the aging process.

A well-reported British
study involving 74,000
healthy adults over the age
of 60 living in Europe
suggested that adherence
to a so-called Mediter-
ranean diet (high in
fruits, vegetables, grains
and unsaturated fats like
olive oil, but low in satu-
rated fats, meat and dairy)
had a direct correlation to
healthy aging and mortality.
Another study at the Human Nutri-
tion Research Center on Aging
at Tufts University suggests that
high-ORAC (Oxygen Radical
Absorbance Capacity) foods, e.g.,
prunes, blueberries, strawberries,
kale, and spinach, may improve
cognitive function and protect
against cell damage—important
factors in the aging process.
A qualified dietitian/nutritionist
can provide more information.
