Fisher Prize for Jewish Education in the Diaspora. Barbara Spectre was honored on June 26 in Jerusalem dur- ing the Assembly of the Jewish Agency for Israel. Paideia was created to provide sub- stantive education of Jewish texts and Jewish theology to the young people of Europe seeking to understand, learn and participate in their heritage. Spectre works at Paideia's One-Year Jewish Studies Program to help build a cadre of educated, self-confident and proud leaders of Jewish culture for societies across Europe and around the world. Her publications include A Theology of Doubt (Hebrew) and, together with Noam Zion of the Hartman Institute, the two-volume A Different Light: The Hannukah Book of Celebration. Established by the Pincus Fund, the Max M. Fisher Prize for Jewish Education in the Diaspora was first given in 1999 to Max M. Fisher of Franklin on his 90th birthday in recognition of his leading role in pro- moting the advancement of Jewish education. He established the new Jewish Agency for Israel, interceded on behalf of Soviet Jewish emigration and was directly involved in drum- ming up support for Israel during the 1967 and 1973 wars. Fisher chaired the Pincus Fund from 1977 until his death in 2005. "It is significant to note — and to be noted — that the work we do at Paideia is enriching Jewish education," Spectre said. "With the recent re-surfacing of anti-Semitic sentiment in Europe, it is ever more urgent for the younger generations to be grounded in — and have an understanding of — their heritage and culture." P1 Answering Israel's Critics The Charge Citing ongoing human rights con- cerns, the United Nations Human Rights Council last month voted in favor of making Israel's actions a permanent item on the council's agenda. Of the council's 47 mem- ber states, the sole opponent of the decision was Canada. The Answer The council's preoccupation with Israel belittles the world's real victims of human rights abuses in such countries as Belarus, Sudan, North Korea and Burma. - Allan Gale, Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit © copyright July 12, 2007, Jewish Renaissance Media
