< HERBERT AND DEBRA KIPERMAN A

Herbert and Debra Kiperman of West Bloomfield each had gastric bypass surgery at the
Beaumont Bariatric Surgery Program to help them lose weight. The laparoscopic proce-
dure reduces the size of the stomach, thus limiting the amount of food taken.
"I'm 59 years old, 5-feet 7-inches and I weighed 370 pounds. I was diabetic for 17
years, had sleep apnea and was at high risk for heart disease," explains Herb, who had to
lose 50 pounds before the program would even accept him.
Since the surgery in September 2005, he has lost enough weight to go off insulin
for diabetes. "My first goal was to weigh 190," he says. "I've reached that and lost even
more." His new goal is to stabilize at 165 pounds. "I've been able to stay at 165 for five
months now, but I have to work hard to stay there."
After accompanying Herb, an accounting director at Leer
Corporation, to presurgical counseling and nutritional visits,
his wife, Debra, decided the surgical bypass was something
she needed, too. Four months after Herb's gastric bypass,
Debra, 51, underwent the procedure.
"I saw the success Herb was having and thought about my
family's history of high blood pressure and high cholesterol,"
says Debra. "I'm 5-foot 1-inch and weighed 245 pounds. I've
lost 90 pounds, and my goal is to lose another 30."
"The beauty of this is that now I work out regularly at the
gym at the Jewish Community Center. What's more, one of
our daughters became motivated and she lost 50 pounds."
Working with the Beaumont Weight Loss Center, the
dietary staff at the University of Indiana — where 19-year-
old Sarah attends college — helped Sarah plan five small
meals, meal-replacement products and blood tests for her. Adds Debra, "Even our
dog went from 40 to 30 pounds, because we took him on our four-mile walks!" ❑
