How to Send Letters
We prefer letters relating to JN articles. We reserve the right to edit or reject letters. Letters
of 225 words or less are considered first. Longer ones will be subject to trimming. Letter writ-
ers are limited in frequency of publication. Letters must be original and contain the name,
address and title of the writer and a day phone number. Non-electronic copies must be hand
signed. Send letters to the JN: 29200 Northwestern Highway, Suite 110, Southfield, MI 48034;
fax (248) 304-8885; e-mail, letters@the jewishnews.com . We prefer e-mail.
Jewish Elitism
Casually, my husband remarked that
the cover story "American Nightmare:
Foreclosure epidemic strikes Jewish
families, too" (June 21, page 15)
sounded elitist.
After reading the article, I had to
agree. We cannot assume that the
Jewish community is above economic,
social and health problems that affect
everyone else and not us.
Alcohol abuse, drug addiction,
mental retardation, genetic diseases,
medical conditions, job loss and even
foreclosures affect Jews and non-Jews
alike. There is no shame in this.
A better headline would have been,
"American Nightmare: Foreclosure
epidemic strikes close to homey"

Abbas' Chance
The Hamas Islamic militants over-
threw Palestinian Authority President
Mahmoud Abbas from the Gaza
Strip recently, leaving Abbas with only
control of the West Bank, which is still
the greater portion of the Palestinian
territories.
Hopefully, if Abbas can negotiate a
successful peace agreement with the
West Bank and Israel, the Palestinians
in the Gaza Strip may overthrow the
Hamas militants and join with the
West Bank for a shared peace with Is-
rael.

See Reality, Joe
U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, R-
Bloomfield Hills, writes that "Israel
needs us to win in Iraq." In his
Community View "Threat of a
Hegemonic Iran" (June 21, page 25), he
tells his American Jewish constituency
that winning the war in Iraq will sta-
bilize the Middle East and keep Iran
away from Israel.
Have Joe, his congressional col-
t4
leagues and the president he supports
ever defined victory in Iraq to us?
Does anyone believe that we are closer
to victory now than four years ago?
Since the defeat of Saddam
Hussein's Sunni government: Iran
has become more powerful; the Iraqi
government is now led by Shi'ites; the
American military has become nearly
broken, and Israel is more alone than
ever. Both the United States and Israel
have become even more hated across
the world, both weakened by the war
in Iraq.
Knollenberg may be right about
tightening economic sanctions
against Iran, as we had done in Iraq
before March of 2003. But staying as
policemen in Iraq with the dream of
someday "winning" has become nearly
futile.
In a New York Times article (July
1), Timothy Egan writes of Oregon's
junior Republican senator, Gordon
Smith, and his change of heart about
the war. Smith said, "I, for one, am at
the end of my rope when it comes to
supporting a policy that has our sol-
diers patrolling the same streets in the
same way, being blown up by the same
bombs day after day."
I, as one of Knollenberg's constitu-
ents, would like to see Joe stop using
the cliche, that "without a U.S. pres-
ence in Iraq, the sectarian violence
could very well explode through-
out the region." Violence is already
exploding there and our soldiers are
exhausted from trying to extinguish
the constant, vicious bloodshed.
Israel does not need us to win in
Iraq. It needs our army to stay strong;
it needs our leaders to be moral and
our people to be supportive. And if
Israel is attacked again by one of its
many enemies, the United States needs
to be strong enough and ready to
come to Israel's defense.

SLEMET 'cha Don't Know
Most people can guess that New York, California and Florida
have the largest Jewish populations in America, but can you
name the nine states where Jews constitute less than one-
tenth of 1 percent of the population?
