MISSION STATEMENT
Platinum is a monthly lifestyle
magazine published by the
Detroit Jewish News. It reflects
all aspects of life in the Metro
Detroit Jewish community,
including decor, fashion, food,
health, spirituality, books,
shopping and more. Whether
profiling a unique member of
our community or the latest hot
spot or trend you should know
about, Platinum's got it covered.
Our goal is to be a part of the
fabric of the Jewish and Metro
Detroit communities and to
reflect those who have
created it — our readers.
LIFE'S SWEETEST LUXURIES are the little ones, aren't they? I, for one, love
escaping my hectic life for an hour to indulge in a pedicure. And one of my favorite
Saturday-night dates with my husband is to bring home Indian food and watch a
taped What Not To Wear marathon. A little pathetic? Maybe. But it makes us happy!
An often unanimous little luxury is ice cream, particularly sweet in the swelter-
ing month of July. In his new book, The Pei:fict Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas,
and Sweet Accompaniments, author, chef and blogger David Lebovitz shares recipes
for some of his favorite decadent concoctions, and has been kind enough to let us
excerpt a few of them in Platinum. For a deliciously refreshing taste of summer, turn
to "The Perfect Scoop" on page 16.
In "Breezy Living" (page 21), Ronnie Wilner and Dr. Nancy Fishman fling open
the doors to their Birmingham home, created with the intention of welcoming
nature indoors. Success: Their home invites peaceful relaxation with three screen
porches, all with views of a neighboring 12-acre nature preserve. One of Wilner's
favorite pastimes? "Grabbing a quick nap" on one of his porches, he says.
In "The Goods" (page 12), we've rounded up our favorite outdoor accessories,
from picnic-friendly dinnerware to an adorable poolside cabana. Also in this issue,
we celebrate one of life's greatest pleasures — achieving a long-desired goal: In "The
New You" (page 26), writer Ruthan Brodsky profiles six local men and women who
have lost substantial amounts of weight — and succeeded in keeping it off.
Celebrate the details — and enjoy the summer.
Above: For more sweet treats, including
this chocolate-chip studded Watermelon
Sorbetto, turn to page 16.
