more meaningful programs, started
a newsletter called "YADda YADda,"
revamped their Web site and held par-
lor-style campaign meetings at people's
homes to introduce newcomers to YAD's
fundraising efforts.
The under-40 crowd raised $837,900
last year for Federation's Annual
Campaign, plus an additional $201,000
in Israel emergency funds.
"I'm very proud of what you've
accomplished," said outgoing Federation
President Peter Alter of Bloomfield Hills.
"The future is now; you are here and we
need you. We think our community is in
really good hands."

Leading The Way

Four days after the installation cer-
emony, Urdan began his YAD presidency
leading by example. He boarded a plane
for Israel along with 23 other young pro-
fessionals at Detroit Metro Airport for
the YAD summer mission (June 25-July
5). The trip marks Urdan's ninth visit
to Israel since 2000, when he was first
inspired to become involved.
"Bubba came on that mission in 2000
and I think he was just coming for a
party," recalled former YAD President
Scott Kaufman of Huntington Woods.
"But, he was really moved. I think he
found something he didn't know he was
missing."
"Bubba is the right person at the
right time for this community;' added
Alter. "His passion, commitment and
dedication really make him stand out.
Everything he does is so contagious; peo-
ple just gravitate toward him. That's why
I refer to this as the year of the Bubba."
Urdan's plans for the coming year
include promoting new, unique events
like "Torah on Tap:' shul crawls where
young adults experience Shabbat servic-
es at different local synagogues, and cul-
tural programs like "Symphony in Jeans"
with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
YAD will also continue its monthly bar
nights and the many other successful
programs already in place.
"You'll hear me say all year long that I
just want you to participate Urdan told
his peers. "Gifts cannot always be mea-
sured by size. Participate with a mean-
ingful gift of your dollars, your time and
your knowledge, and we will secure our
community for years to come. When we
all participate in our community, we can
not be stopped." I I

Get To Know
Bubba!

At the age of 37, Brad "Bubba"
Urdan has led more missions,
served on more boards and
recruited more people to support
Jewish agencies and causes than
most people have in a lifetime.
Why is he so passionate?
"As a child, I was a beneficiary
of the Jewish community but
didn't realize it until I got older,"
Urdan says. "My family went
through some tough times and
we received support from Jewish
Family Service; for our bar
mitzvahs, my brothers and I got
free memberships to the Jewish
Community Center, and one of
my brothers received a car loan
through the Hebrew Free Loan
Association. Now, I want to give
something back."
In addition to his involvement
with YAD, Bubba, who works at
the Print House, a full-service
printing company in Farmington
Hills, serves on Federation's Board
of Governors and is a member
of United Jewish Communities'
National Young Leadership
Cabinet. He has led several
Israel missions and also serves
on the local boards of Jewish
Apartments and Services, the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and ORT. In
2005, Urdan received Federation's
Mark Young Leadership Award for
his dedication.
"I get far more out of our com-
munity than I will ever be able to
give," Urdan says. "It's my honor
to step up and work with the YAD
board as president."
Bubba is known for his outgo-
ing, boisterous style and also for
marching to the beat of his own
drum.
"Rules are for those who are
not willing to make up their own
rules," Urdan said at his instal-
lation, quoting retired Air Force
General Chuck Yaeger and elicit-
ing chuckles from the crowd.
"Bubba is as genuine as they
come, he's the real McCoy," said
JCC Past President Hannan Lis of
Farmington Hills. "He has tremen-
dous passion and tells is like it is.
He has a real gift of connecting
with people. He'll bring lots of
energy, life and enthusiasm to his
position." 1
