convention program, Michigan Jewish
War Veterans and Ladies Auxiliary
awarded 21 college scholarships of
$750 to local high school graduates.
The event was co-chaired by Shirlee
Marshall and Herb Benson and was
held at the Oak Park Community
Center on June 14.
Awardees are Shayna Goodman,
Mallory Soffin, Lauren Davies,
Lauren Leland, Nyssa Rabinowitz,
Stephanie Gooel, Alyssa Simko, liana
Rosenbloom, Rhiannon Rhoades,

ORT America
Tel Aviv More than 4,000 Israeli
students on 17 campuses are recipi-
ents of ORT America's Students at Risk
program. The students attend schools
that are recipients of World ORT's new
Science Journey program, supported
by ORT America.
Nearly $370,000 worth of vouch-
ers was distributed to economically
disadvantaged students for textbooks,
school supplies and uniforms, and
sports attire. The Students at Risk pro-
gram is also supported by the Jewish
—
federations of North America.
Other beneficiaries include new
immigrants from Ethiopia, youth
on the Na'ale program who arrive
alone in Israel from the former Soviet
Union, and members of families that
have found it difficult to make a liv-
ing since being forcibly removed from
Gaza.

top finalists in the National Council
of Jewish Women/Greater Detroit
Section's annual Jewish Youth Awards
essay contest.
NCJW held an essay contest on
anti-Semitism and its effects on teens.
After reading hundreds of essays,
judges Ron Elkus, Berl Falbaum, Ruth
Goldman, Lea Luger and Dr. Mara
Rubenstein awarded Jonathan the top
prize of $2,500 and Lauren a prize of
$1,000.
The Top 10 runner-ups received
$100 and a copy of The Golden Land
by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin.
All 10 finalists were honored on
April 22 at the NCJW office: Zack
Berlin, Michael Brodsky, Sarah Jessup,
Daniel Keen, Brandon Lebowitz,
Lauren Mondry, Lizzy Podolsky, Marni
Roisman and Jonathan Warsh.

Saving Lives In Israel
A mobile intensive cardiac care ambulance was received by American Red
Magen David for Israel Dr. John J. Mames Chapter-Michigan Region. The
ambulance, in honor of Leonard P. and Ann Baruch, was given by their
children, Dr. Murray and Linda Baruch; Dr. Robb and Rhonda Feldman;
Dr. Mark and Miriam Goldberg; their family and friends. The May dedi-
cation took place at Detroit Jewry's Israel Independence Day Parade.
