A Guy Thing

Men share camaraderie at fundraiser for Israeli soldiers.

A

night of sports, gambling and a chance
to chill with the guys brought more than
250 men to the Tam O'Shanter Country
Club in West Bloomfield, where they helped raise
money for a program that gives Israeli soldiers a
similar opportunity to relax and unwind.
The first ever "Guy's Night Out," sponsored
by the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces
Michigan chapter, brought in more than $150,000
— enough money to send 1,000 Israeli soldiers
for a whole week of "R & R" through the FIDF
Spirit Program. It provides stress relief for combat
soldiers, sending them to state-of-the-art rest and recreation
centers with swimming pools, dance halls, sports activities
and more.
"This is a great way for guys from Detroit's Jewish commu-
nity to come together, have fun and support our soldiers in
Israel;' said partygoer David Gorosh of Birmingham.
Patrons paid $300 per person to attend the May 21 event,
which featured a golf scramble followed by a casino night
including a Texas Hold'em tournament, casino gaming, open
bar, a cigar lounge and strolling dinner.
"We had the Pistons/Cays playoff game on huge TV screens
all around. It really added sizzle to the event:' said co-chair

Rick Kovacs of West Bloomfield. He organized the
guy's night along with Lindsay Gross of Franklin
and Mitchell Hollander of Bloomfield Hills.
"It was a lot of fun. We're thrilled with the turnout
and the guys just had fun schmoozing with other
guys;' Kovacs added. "There's a real camaraderie'
The event also included a sports memorabilia
silent auction, with unique items from the Pistons,
Tigers and Red Wings. A pair of boxing gloves
signed by Muhammad Ali was among other items
up for bids. A similar event is being planned for
April 7, 2008, the night of the NCAA Basketball
Championship game.
Other guys spotted in the guy's night crowd included: FIDF
Michigan chapter president Gary Shiffman, Alan Schram
and Jon Steinberg, all of West Bloomfield, and Neil Rockind
of Birmingham.
