"In a situation like this, once you
start to speculate on things, you're
in a very difficult area because
you're really bringing your own
prejudices to bear on things you
don't know," he asserts.
In the film, Jolie as Mariane
expresses the hope that people on
both sides avoid giving in to violence.
But Winterbottom is reluctant to offer
messages or morals.
"I don't come with a preconception
[of] how I'm going to get to the point
where I deliver, `That's why you must
do this," he says."That's not me':
But, "probably, if you talked to
Angelina or Mariane, they would
have a much clearer idea of what the
message was they wanted you to get.
I think Mariane wrote the book with
that idea in mind, and Angelina prob-
ably wanted to be involved with the
film with that idea in mind.
"There's extremists on both sides
who want to polarize the debate in
such a way that you cannot possibly
get on," he says. "The only kind of
dialogue is between your bomb and
my rocket.
"Mariane, having gone through
the experience she went through, can
resist that temptation and can say
there are good people on both sides.
You have to avoid hatred; you have to
work in a positive spirit."

died. Daniel Pearl was decapi-
tated in Karachi in January
2002, but although four Islamic
terrorists were quickly con-
victed of the crime and are
appealing their sentences, new
alleged accomplices continue
to turn up.
Pakistani police recently
arrested two additional sus-
pects who, police say, are
linked to Pearl's kidnapping and
death. In March, the Pentagon
released a transcript of the
interrogation of Khalid Sheikh
Mohammed, the alleged al-
Qaida mastermind behind the
9-11 attack now held by the U.S.
military at Guantanamo Bay.
According to the interroga-
tion transcript, Mohammed said
that he had personally behead-
ed Pearl, boasting, "I decapitat-
ed with my blessed right hand
the head of the American Jew,
Daniel Pearl."
