udge Jessica R. Cooper will
make a career transition,
after nearly 30 years, vacat-
ing her seat on the Michigan Court
of Appeals to begin an arbitration
and mediation practice that will
include resolving complex business
disputes.
Effective July 27,
Cooper will put to
work her experi-
ence throughout
her career as both a
trial and an appel-
late judge to help
bring matters to
conclusion outside Judge Cooper
of court.
Cooper's practice will be based
in Bingham Farms. She will oversee
mediations and facilitation sessions
that will seek to bring resolution
to cases, avoiding costly and public
trials, with privacy and a higher
level of legal sophistication. She also
plans to handle local and national
arbitrations.
Cooper has served on the
Michigan Court of Appeals since
2001. Previously, she served as a trial
judge on Michigan's Sixth Circuit
Court (Oakland County) since 1986.
She was a judge on Michigan's 46th
District Court, beginning in 1979.
After graduating from the Wayne
State University Law School in
Detroit, she began her career as an
assistant defender in the Michigan
State Appellate Defenders Office
until she entered the private practice
of law as a civil litigator.
She has served as an adjunct
professor of law at the University
of Michigan Law School, teaching
Evidence and Family Law She spent
several years as an adjunct profes-
sor at the Michigan State University
College of Law.
Cooper has taught many legal
education and trial practice seminars
and is a continuing faculty member
at Emory Law School in Atlanta as
part of the trial techniques program
required for graduation.
In 1996, Cooper ran as an
Independent for the Michigan
Supreme Court because she firmly
believes that partisanship has no
place in the judiciary. I I
