Avi Leibovitch and Avi Buckman,
13, both of West Bloomfield
wo couples who are in a class by
themselves, Lisa and Gary Shiffman
of West Bloomfield and Cheryl and
Ron Riback of Bloomfield Hills, were honored
by Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit
for their years of support,
dedication and leadership.
More than 600 people
attended the day school's
annual dinner May 17
at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek Southfield to
applaud the honorees.
The cocktail reception,
program and dinner also
helped raise money for
scholarships so students
can attend the Farmington Hills-based Jewish
day school regardless of their family's ability to
pay.
"What's so special about Hillel is that it gets
into your soul:' said Lisa Shiffman after accept-
ing the 2007 Dream Maker Award. "It shapes
who your children and your family become."
The Shiffmans' three sons, Adam, Matthew
and Alex, are all Hillel Day School graduates.
The family created the Shiffman Family Day
School Tuition Assistance Fund through the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit so
thousands of other children can also receive the
gift of a Jewish education.
"Gary and I can't say enough to thank the
Hillel teachers and administrators who work
so hard to teach our children all that you do:'
Lisa Shiffman said. "I look at our three boys and
know their experiences growing up in the Hillel
community have truly been the rich soil from
which they have grown."
Cheryl and Ron Riback received the 2007
Rabbi Jacob Segal Award, named for the school's
late founder. Ron is a past president of Hillel
Day School and was an active member of the
school's board of directors for many years.
Cheryl, a former teacher in the Troy school dis-
trict, has volunteered at Hillel on a regular basis.
The couple's four children, Ben, Mike, Jason and
Lauren, are also Hillel grads.
"How appropriate it is as Hillel begins its
second 50 years of service that family members
of Jack Bonin, a founder of Hillel and a friend
and supporter of Rabbi Jacob Segal, receive the
award named in his honor:' said former Hillel
Headmaster Mark Smiley in a letter to the
Ribacks. "What a dynamic duo of day school
families!"
Spotted in the crowd at the Hillel annual din-
ner were: Trudy and Arthur Weiss and Anna
and Yale Levin, all of Farmington Hills; Fran
and Aaron Martin and Karen and David
Gunsberg, all of West Bloomfield; Amy and
Jack Folbe of Huntington Woods; Karen and
Jeff Schoenberg of Birmingham; Marla and
Steven Zack and Marcie and Rob Orley, all of
Franklin; and Michelle and Bobby Kleinman
and Deedee and Michael Perlman, all of
Bloomfield Hills. II
