Tallahassee/JTA Florida divested
its pensions from Sudan and Iran's
energy sector. Gov. Charlie Crist
signed the legislation on June 15 at
Temple Beth El in Boca Raton.
Fourteen states have adopted
divestment policies from Sudan, and
eight of them have passed the Sudan
Divestment Task Force model of tar-
geted Sudan divestment. Six of these
states have developed state specific
methods of Sudan divestment.
Congress is considering legisla-
tion that would facilitate such
divestment by naming companies
that deal with Iran's energy sec-
tor. State Sen. Ted Deutch, D-Boca
Raton, who initiated the Florida leg-
islation, said it would affect about $1
billion of $150 billion in the state's
pensions.
