ues-
tion:
Dear
Barb;' cently,
you've been
discussing de-
hydration and
water. What
about sports drinks? Thanks, Don.

A

nswer Dear Don, The
idea behind sports drinks
.(e.g., Gatorade) is that
they replace minerals like sodium,
potassium, and other electrolytes,
(important to cell hydration),
which are lost during vigorous
exercise/sweating. Sports drink
proponents also tout carbohydrate
replacement and the "better taste"
of their drinks, which, they say, is
more likely to result in less "con-
sumption fatigue" than water.

The American College of Sports
Medicine offers the following:
_(i • A body-weight loss
greater than 2% due to loss
of water is the threshold for
dehydration;
• Fluid and electrolyte re-
quirements vary widely
due to individual body
makeup, environmen-
tal conditions, and the
activity engaged in;
thus, rehydration strate-
gies should be tailored to
individual circumstances;
• Generally, a normal
balanced diet (with no caffeine/
alcohol) before and after exercise
should maintain a proper min-
eral/nutrient balance;
• After exercise, pacing fluid in-
take every 20-30 minutes is more
effective than ingesting the same
amount at once. I hope this helps.
