'Work For Detroit,' Urges Archer
Former Detroit Mayor Dennis W. Archer gave
an insider's view of the future of Detroit and
the region when he spoke to 75 Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology supporters on May 16.
Archer encouraged attendees to support the
city, work on behalf of education, business inter-
ests and opportunities, transportation and the
arts, suggesting that those who live in the sub-
urbs are ultimately linked with Detroit.
"Our children are exposed not only to the lure
of local American cities but to global cities as
Amy Folbe of Huntington Woods
well;' he said. "Right now they are using their
feet to let us know how they feel about living in listen to one of Dennis Archer's
points.
Michigan."
He spoke at the American Technion Society's
Fourth Annual Estate Planners Luncheon held at Andiamo Italia West in
Bloomfield Township.
Jo Strausz Rosen, ATS Detroit director, presented Technion news updates that
included news that NATO recently financed research at Technion's Stephen and
Nancy Grand Water Research Institute to protect water against biological or
chemical terrorism.
The event was chaired by Jerry Kanter, ATS president with joint role as
National ATS co-chair of the 2007 Renaissance and Remembrance Mission to
Berlin and Israel.

Young Helping Hands
Isaac Gabriel Smith, 5, of West Bloomfield decided to raise money for Yad Ezra,
the Berkley-based kosher food pantry where his grandmother Dottie Smith has
volunteered for 17 years. On occasion, he has tagged along with her to the ware-
house to help out.
After his last visit, he came up with the idea of creating play dough sculptures
in various colors and sizes to sell to family members. He recently gave the pro-
ceeds to Yad Ezra for client families.
Isaac had a ready answer for why he decided to sculpt so others could eat. "I
want all poor people to have good, good, good, good, good, yummy food — and
I like helping people out."

Our JN Mission

Any Familiar Faces?
These women were all in their 20s circa 1932-1933 and were, in effect, a soror-
ity but didn't call it that. Sophie Tribuck Sulkes is second on the left in the front
row. "According to my mother;' said former Detroiter A.A. Sulkes of Tallahassee,
Fla.,"one day they all decided to get dressed up and go to a commercial photog-
rapher." All the women lived most of their lives in Detroit and had strong ties to
the community, Sulkes said. E-mail the JN if you recognize anyone else in the
