ues-
tion:
Dear
Barb; th the
summer months
soon upon us,
I'm concerned
about my chil-
dren's water intake. Any sugges-
tions? Thanks,Kylie.

A

nswer Dear Kylie, As I
noted last time, appropriate
intake of water is essen-
tial to good health. Children seem
particularly vulnerable to dehydra-
tion, which can be attributable to a
number of causes:
• Overheating (e.g., due to
playing outside on a hot
summer day or fever);
• Diarrhea and vomiting;
• Diseases like lung
infections, diabetes, kid-
ney disease, and condi-
tions affecting hor-
mones and the nervous
system that can lead to
increased fluid loss;
• Decreased fluid intake
due to illness or unavail-
ability of fluids.

Symptoms of childhood dehydra-
tion can include: decreased energy;
dry, sticky mouth; no tears when
crying; elevated heart rate with no
fever; decreased urine output; dark
yellow urine; and in urgent cases:
sunken eyes; cool, mottled hands
and feet; light-headedness; and
lethargy, confusion, dizziness, or
delirium.

Children generally need 44 to 88
ounces of fluid (preferably water)
per day—more if exercising. Call
your doctor at the first sign of sus-
pected dehydration.
