T

he timeless plot of
Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet
— a tragic arc of forbidden
love between two teenagers from the
feuding Capulet and Montague fami-
lies — has been reflected in modern
theater, television, film and literature.
Charles Gounod's Romeo & Juliet,
in French with English surtitles, is
the operatic version, and it will close
MOT's spring season June 2-9 at the
Detroit Opera House.
Romeo and Juliet isn't all about love
songs and kisses; the opera has a lot of
sword fighting that could be danger-
ous at times. And it's one of the stage
manager's duties to make sure the
swordplay is safe during the three-act
performance.

Ken Saltzman, who stage-man-
aged Michigan Opera Theatre's highly
successful production of Giacomo
Puccini's Turandot in April, is back for
Romeo & Juliet. A native of Rochester,
N.Y., he began stage-managing for
MOT with Carmen in 2001. With
Romeo & Juliet, he is working with 10
principal performers, a dozen super-
numeraries and 42 chorus members.
"It's a lot less than the 200 cast
members in Turandot or the hundreds
more we use in an Aida production, so
it's less cumbersome on stage, but the
scope of the production and sword-
play involved present a challenge
Saltzman explains. "We employed a
fencing coach during rehearsals to
help perfect the sword duels. There's
