Reality Notes

As of press time, stylist Ben
Mollin is still in the running on
Shear Genius,
Bravo's hairstyl-
ing competition
show airing 10
p.m. Wednesdays.
Mollin comes
from a religious
home in Indiana,
Brett Ratner
and his father
is a synagogue choral director.
I expect his folks are happy for
his success but less than thrilled
about his many tattoos.
On the Lot, a new reality show
produced by Steven Spielberg
and Mark Burnett (Survivor),
began airing on Fox on May 22.
Lot is sort of an American Idol

for aspiring filmmakers, who are
competing for a $1-million devel-
opment deal.
The first week, some 50 semifi-
nalists were chosen out of 12,000
people who submitted videos to
the program. Among the semifi-
nalists was Michael B. Chait, 22,
who grew up in West Bloomfield
and now divides his time between
his hometown and Chicago. Chait
entered the contest at the urg-
ing of his girlfriend, parents and
friends.
The second week the number
of contestants was winnowed
down to a lucky 18 finalists (did
Spielberg decide on the number
"chai"?).
Unforturnately, Chait was not
among them, having been elimi-
nated on the episode that aired
May 28.
Jewish judges on the show
include directors Brett Ratner
and Jon Avenet and actress
Carrie Fisher. Director Garry
Marshall — perhaps the most
Jewish non-Jew on Earth — is the
remaining judge. 7
