Dear
Barb, m-
mertime is
coming and
I'm concerned
about dehydra-
tion. Any suggestions? Joyce.
nswer (Part 1 of 2): Dear
Joyce, Water makes up ap-
proximately 60% of body
weight in healthy adults. Water
provides the medium in which all
the physical and chemical process-
es of life take place.
Water has no calories, and, con-
sequently, provides no energy;
however, people can survive weeks
without food, but only a few
-1 days without water.
Water plays an important
role in:
• Regulating body tem-
perature;
• Carrying oxygen and
nutrient to the cells;
• Removing waste;
• Cushioning joints;
• Protecting organs and
tissues.
The thirst mechanism is usually an
adequate guide for water intake,
except in extreme heat, heavy
exercise, excessive sweating, the
ill, infants, and, occasionally, the
elderly. Typically, an adult needs 1
milliliter (ml) of water per calo-
rie eaten. So, if you intake 1,800
calories, you would need to intake
1,800 ml (divide ml by 29.5 to
convert to fluid ounces), which =
approximately 60 oz. of water.
