all in a night's work
It's 2:46 a.m. I end my English paper with a decent conclusion and run the spell check. I reread the essay and
change the word "form" to "from" in several places. I hit the print button.
There's a problem: I'm out of paper. All I can find are printouts of movie times, airline ticket confirmations
and old news articles. Little help for a student with a deadline of 8 a.m.
Fourteen distractions, or 20 minutes later, I am no closer to solving the problem. I've got to get to Meijer, that
24-hour oasis to new parents, procrastinating students, late-night shift workers and other assorted night owls.

NFTY-Michigan's most recent event, Spring Kallah, was held the
weekend of April 27 at Temple Beth Emeth in Ann Arbor. At this
event — the seniors' last — a new regional board was welcomed
and another great year was wrapped up! Next season will begin with
NFTY-MI's 'Kickoff Event" on Sunday, Aug. 26.
It's an eerie experience driving alone on the road with traffic lights blinking and unfamiliar voices on the

radio. Finally, Meijer! I never felt so comforted by that glowing red-and-orange logo.
Instead of heading straight to the office supplies, I drift through relatively empty aisles and head straight
to Electronics. I'm in the market for a camera so, of course, I feel compelled to toy with each multi-mega pixel
contraption. Never one to resist a bargain, I cannot resist rummaging through the buy-one-get-one pile of CDs.
Akon. Fall Out Boy. Who knew there were such bargains at 4 a.m.? My favorite brand of cookies and cream is
half-off, and I grab a container. Finally, what I came for — the paper.
I pay, head home, fill the printer and watch as it spits out page after page of my assign-
ment.
I polish off the last of my ice cream, turn off the computer and look at the clock. 5:30 a.m.
In three hours, pristine, neatly typed sheets of paper will be in my teacher's hands without her

Hadas' juggling act
t's 9 a.m. and I have already been up for three hours. With the day beginning in the dark hours of
the morning and not ending until roughly 9 p.m., I'm starting to believe that daylight no longer
exists. Chemistry, Algebra 2, musical rehearsal, T'fillah Team — and that's only the schedule for
Tuesday. Sadly, Wednesday doesn't look better.
After about tvvo weeks of this mayhem, the only thing I want to do is sleep! Trying to keep the bal-
ance between work and play seems to get harder and harder and the pressures are only beginning to
pile up. Just as I begin to freak out and lose it completely, I try to remember the simple ways to relieve
the stress that consumes me.
There are thousands of ways to get rid of stress, and I would guess that most teens have tried at
least 500. There are stress balls, exercise, screaming into your pillow, throwing things at walls and, when
all else fails, there are always tears. But the facts still remain: The workload will not lighten unless you
take action.
Procrastination: I know you have heard the word, and I am also pretty sure you have found yourself
guilty of giving it a try. However, I do not recommend this method of relieving stress. If anything,
procrastination is a surefire way to add a few gray hairs to your head. By the time that you realize you
put off a paper or project, you probably have two or three other important assignments due around the
same dates. Putting work off leads to nothing but additional stress — trust me, I've tried it!
My best advice? Plan ahead. Make sure you have a planner so you can jot down
important dates and reminders. Most of the time you know your schedule in advance,
so why not plan your work around when you will be free. That way, you will be able to
enjoy some much-needed free time and feel rested and healthy for whatever the next
week holds.

All dressed up for a Purim party are Cara Kleiman, Hallie Platt and Vicki Beneson, all
of Southfield.
NCSY (National Conference of Synagogue Youth) has held many
activities throughout the year, within the Detroit chapter itself and
the Central East Region as a whole, including white water rafting,
a Purim celebration, weekly Latte and Learning, whirlyball, and, of
course, Shabbatons. The last and greatest event of the year will
be the regional convention taking place Memorial Day weekend
in Cleveland. Next year is sure to be off to a great start with our
annual rafting trip Labor Day weekend.
