Whoa There
You published a Special Commentary
by Linda Zlotoff, "Making An
Environmental Difference" (May 10,
page 26). The scientific evidence of
the planet warming is far from being
proven. The dabbling of the United
Nations into the politicized issue is a
travesty.
Much research is still outstand-
ing before a definite conclusion can
be reached that human activities are
the main cause of global warming.
Volcanic eruptions account for more
CO2 infusion into the atmosphere
than human activities over 10 years all
over the world.
There are many other causes, as
well as questions, before we jump
to the conclusions mentioned in the
article.

Settlement And
Resettlement

At a price you won't believe.

May 23,1948: Allonei Abba, a moshav
shittufi (collective settlement),
was founded during the War of
Independence in western Lower
Galilee in northern Israel. Many of
the settlers were survivors of the
Holocaust from Czechoslovakia,
Romania, Germany and other coun-
tries. The economy was based main-
ly on farming: poultry, dairy cattle,
field crops and vineyards. The name
refers to the natural Tabor oaks in
the vicinity (allon, "oak") and also
commemorates Abba Berdiczew, a
hero of the Haganah killed in com-
bat during World War II. Population
in 2002: 283.

What A Mentsh
I have read the Jewish News for more
than 50 years and I have been a mem-
ber of Young Israel of Southfield for 32
years; I don't believe that I have ever read
a more moving article than "Growing
Community" (May 17, page 13).
Dr. Howard Korman is the perfect
example of the adage "one person can
make a difference." It is almost impos-
sible to get discouraged when Howard
tackles a project. The article did not
mention the synagogue auction on
May 20, toward which Howard devoted
countless hours and persuasive com-
munication to donors and merchants.
I am convinced that Howard and
Michal Korman were sent to Young
Israel of Southfield by a higher author-
ity at the moment when we needed to
be reinvigorated.

May 29,1948: Kibbutz Shomrat
near the town of Acre in northern
Israel was founded as the first new
settlement in the days-old State of
Israel. The settlers were pioneers
from Hungary, Czechoslovakia and
Romania. In 1970, it had 324 inhab-
itants; in 2002, 358. Its farming
included irrigated field and fodder
crops, avocado plantations, dairy
cattle and poultry. For years it had a
furniture factory and was a partner
in Ha-Shomer ha-Za'ir enterprises
in the Haifa Bay area. It also oper-
ated guest rooms. The kibbutz's
image took a hit after a local girl
was raped by a gang of young kib-
butz members in 1988. The name
Shomrat is derived from shomer
("guardsman"), and also evokes the
Ha-Shomer ha-Za'ir movement.
