Books And Comfort
creates a cozy children's
library at HAVEN.
„MI
Barbara Coden
Special to the Jewish News
reating a children's library at
HAVEN, an Oakland County
battered women's shelter,
was like "giving birth" for the Metro
Detroit Council of Jewish Women
International. Nine months ago, they
decided to join the national JWI
Library Initiative Project, with its goal
of donating 100 libraries to shelters
around the nation.
A two-day fundraiser was held
in December at the Barnes & Noble
book store in West Bloomfield, where
JWI members also staffed a store
gift-wrapping table to raise additional
funds for the library. More than $5,500
was raised and more than 15 boxes of
new children's books were purchased
to stock the library shelves.
In addition, many local chapters
collected new children's books at their
meetings. Contributions also came
from the Berkley Library, the nursery
schools at Congregation Shaarey Zedek
and Temple Emanu-El and Greene
Elementary School. The goal is to have
enough books so every child at the
shelter can take a new book with them
to their new home when they leave
HAVEN.
JWI also worked with corporate
sponsor Verizon Wireless, which
donated $10,000 to the Haven library
to keep it funded for many more years.
Verizon is exclusive corporate spon-
sor for the national initiative and has
donated $10,000 to each of the 17
libraries already established.
Besides building a library with the
basics provided by the national ini-
tiative — which includes three oak
bookcases, 250 books to start, a round
table and small chairs for the children,
a large and a small rocking chair and
a colorful rug — the local committee
was able to add stuffed animals and
colorful children's pictures to brighten
the room. The officers and board of
JWI's Centennial Chapter also contrib-
uted many new children's games.
The committee was able to help
furnish a media room adjoining the
library, where children can do home-
work and relax with story videos.
HAVEN provided a computer and
desk, and the local JWI provided a
couch with colorful pillows and a
throw and a new TV/DVD combo,
along with donated children's videos.
The library was officially dedicated
April 25. A plaque was presented by
Cindy Moss of the local library corn-
mittee to Beth Morrison, president and
CEO of HAVEN. Also on hand from
JWI's national office in Washington,
D.C., were Stephanie Schneider and
Alexis Bock.
The JWI committee plans to contin-
ue its relationship with HAVEN to keep
the library stocked with books. "We're
a marriage now, HAVEN and JWI,"
Moss said. "This was quite successful
and quite enjoyable to do:'
Members of the local library
committee include Ruth Blackman,
Barbara Coden, Ruthe Goldstein and
Helen Lipton, all of West Bloomfield;
Marsha Baker, Carolyn Fine and Elaine
Meyers, all of Farmington Hills; Esther
Applebaum and Cindy Moss, both of
Southfield; Lucy Gersten of Commerce
Township; Ida Nathan and Estelle
Robinson, both of Bloomfield Hills;
and Vicky Levesque of Redford.
Barbara Coden is co-president of
Centennial Chapter of Jewish Women
International.
