The Colbert Report: Snappy satire.

Although she won't claim credit
for them, there have been a number
of funny Jewish moments on The
Colbert Report.
Colbert has blown a shofar many
times, and during the High Holy Days
last year, he set up a telephone num-
ber, 1-800-00PS-Jew, a toll-free apol-
ogy line so Jews who'd offended him
during the last year could apologize
and atone for that sin.
Silverman grew up in Gainesville,
Fla., "not a hotbed of Judaism," she
says. "Certainly there were enough
[Jews] for me to have my Hebrew
school class every grade. My syna-
gogue is Conservative. I'd say I knew
my stuff. By the time of my bat mitz-
vah, I felt I could walk in [comfort-
ably] to any synagogue."
Still, outside Hebrew school,
Silverman admits to feeling like an
outsider. "In high school, there were
about 430 people in my class, and
four of us were Jewish. You know, I'm
always fascinated when people tell me
their school or community was very
Jewish. I think, despite growing up
that way, they often feel like outsiders,
too!'
Her parents "were worried" about
her inclination toward a showbiz
career. "They were supportive, but
scared, which is probably right on.
They wanted me to do something
where they felt the odds were better.
They wanted to be sure I was OK."
She complied, graduating Phi Beta
Kappa in 1994 from Yale with a degree
in molecular biology. Still, she had
time to join an improv group while
there, eventually making her way to
Chicago.
In the Windy City, she performed
with local improv groups and saw
Steve Carell (The Office), Tina Fey

and, yes, Stephen Colbert perform
there, too.
She moved to New York, where she
worked and won Emmy, Peabody and
Writers Guild awards for her work
on both The Daily Show with Jon
Stewart and Late Night with Conan
O'Brien. In both cases, she was the
only woman on the writing staff.
"I think women develop humor for
the same reason men do, although
I don't always think it's to defend
yourself against other people;' says
Silverman. "A lot of comedy writers
I know are extraordinarily hard on
themselves and use humor to deal
with it.
"I do think that people who go into
comedy generally consider themselves
outsiders. I had a fantastic child-
hood, but I was definitely different
from most of my classmates. I grew
up in north Florida, home of Lynyrd
Skynyrd, as a dark Jewish girl who was
the tallest, skinniest one in the class."
She definitely sees a relationship
between her background and her
career. "I think if you're born into
a minority group, you're taught to
question authority. And questioning
authority is a lot of what makes com-
edy work."
Besides, she adds, "it's a good way
to pass the time while waiting for the
Messiah!'
Meanwhile, when Colbert is asked
to comment on Silverman for this
article, he says: "Allison Silverman is
Jewish?"
