Pontiac Jewish Leader

L
ee Sirlin was born in Brooklyn
and earned a degree in
dairy science from Michigan
Agricultural College in East Lansing
(now Michigan State University).
At the time he graduated in 1943,
Jews were not being hired in the nation-
al dairy industry, but a professor sug-
gested he apply at a local Pontiac dairy
which didn't discriminate. After serving
as an Army staff sergeant in Trinidad
during World War II, Mr. Sirlin became
plant manager for Nye Dairy in Pontiac
and remained there 25 years until it
closed.
During that time, he became a leader
in what was then a thriving Jewish com-
munity in Pontiac, serving as president
and trustee of Congregation B'nai Israel.
He was also president of the Pontiac
Chapter of B'nai B'rith and a Boy Scout
leader.
After Nye Dairy closed, Mr. Sirlin
worked as a production manager for
Borden Co. in Detroit and Madison
Heights.
Leon "Lee" Sirlin, 86, of
Southfield, died May 11,
2007.
Proud of his military
service, he served on a
committee of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars that helped
vets in need of financial aid.
He was also a member of
Jewish War Veterans. In his
Lee Sirlin
later years, he was a leader
in the Institute for Retired Professionals
at the Jewish Community Center.
Mr. Sirlin was a lifelong nature lover
and an early advocate for enviornmental
protection. He was a longtime volunteer
at the greenhouse at the Cranbrook
Institute, maintaining and nurturing its
plants and assisting in its annual plant
sale. As a Scout leader, he instilled in his
troop the creed of leaving every envior-
nment the boys visited cleaner than they
found it.
He also cared deeply about his fam-
ily. "Dad lived for and loved his family
more than he loved life itself,' said his
son Keith.
Lee Sirlin is survived by
his wife, Esther Sirlin of
Southfield; daughter and
son-in-law, Kay and Marc
Slonim of Seattle, Wash;
sons and daughters-in-
law, Ralph Sirlin and Lisa
Sarkisian of Birmingham,
Keith and Sandy Sirlin of

Sirlin; grandchildren, Sara
and Annette Slonim, Chloe
Sarkisian-Sirlin, Carley Annette Sirlin,
Alyssa Rose Sirlin; brother and sister-in-
law, Herman "Hank" and Allison Sirlin
of Gabriola, Canada; sister, Estelle Fried
of Long Island, N.Y.; Esther's children,
Steve and Spencer Minns.
He was the beloved husband of the
late Annette Sirlin; loving son of the late
Fanny and the late Nathan Sirlin.

Cemetery. Contributions may be made
