Cantor To Be Feted "And the Beat Goes On" is the theme of Congregation B'nai Moshe's celebration of Cantor Earl G. Berris' 10th year with the West Bloomfield Conservative congregation. The weekend of May 18-20 will be marked by special ser- vices, Shabbat dinner and afternoon Kiddush and Cantor Berris a Sunday "Shulabration!" with food, entertainment, danc- ing and an auction. Cantor Berris is a Detroit native who lives in Farmington Hills with wife, Ilana, and children Doron and Leore. He was ordained in 1976 by the Cantors Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, with a degree in sacred music. He has a bachelor's in music therapy and a master's in marriage and family counseling from Wayne State University, Detroit. Cantor Berris is president of the Michigan Board of Cantors. He is the tri-state chairman of the Cantors Assembly, the orga- nization of Conservative cantors. "The past 10 years have been very professionally and person- ally rewarding:' Cantor Berris says. "B'nai Moshe has a unique position in the Conservative movement in Detroit, being very progressive in its thinking but traditional in its ritual content. "I've gained much from the warm, welcoming and commit- ted members of the congrega- tion and have been proud to work as a true partner with Rabbi Elliot Pachter in moving our congregation forward." The festivities begin Friday with a pre-Shabbat dinner. Shabbat Under the Stars, open to the community, begins at 7 p.m. with outdoor services and an oneg Shabbat featuring sing- ing and dancing. Rabbi Joins Academy Rabbi Eliezer Finkelman will join the Frankel Jewish Academy of Metropolitan Detroit faculty for the coming academic year. A native of the Bronx, Rabbi Finkelman earned a bachelor of arts in English at Yeshiva College and rabbinic ordination at Yeshiva University, New York t He later completed a Ph.D. in com- parative litera- Rabbi ture at the City Finkelman University of New York. He and his family lived in Oak Park during his long tenure as director of the Hillel Foundation at Wayne State University, Detroit. AJC Looks At Energy The Metropolitan Detroit Chapter of the American Jewish Committee will hold its annual meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Max M. Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Township. This year's program, "Energy, Economics and Politics: More Than A Michigan Story — A Global Problem:' will feature AJC's energy specialist Ami Greener. Elections and a short business meeting will precede the pro- gram. A kosher desert reception in honor of outgoing chapter president Andrew Doctoroff will follow.
