"The prize is to celebrate the voices
of emerging writers who have expand-
ed the world of Jewish literature
with their written work," Rohr's son
George explains. George Rohr, a New
York businessman who is active in
Jewish philanthropy, continues, "Those
voices are found throughout the world.
Including writers from across the
globe makes the community of writers
richer, more complex and, ultimately,
more reflective of the greater Jewish
experience."
The two runners-up, who will each
receive $7,500, are Amir Guttfreund
of Israel, author of Our Holocaust, and
Michael Lavigne, of San Francisco,
author of Not Me.
The other finalists are Yael Hedaya
of Israel, author of Accidents, and
Naomi Alderman, of England, author
of Disobedience.
The prize, administered by the
Jewish Book Council, will be given
annually, with awards to fiction and
nonfiction writers in alternate years.
The Rohr family will also estab-
lish the Rohr Family Jewish Literary
Institute, a forum devoted to the conti-

will convene a biannual retreat, meet-
ing for the first time after the next
round of awardees are announced in
2008. All of the finalists will be invited
to participate.
Nominations for the award are
initiated by an anonymous com-
mittee, who submitted the names of
100 books and authors to the panel
of judges who made the final selec-
tions. Judges for this year's award are
Professor Jeremy Dauber of Columbia
University, novelist (and MacArthur
Fellow) Rebecca Goldstein, Daisy
Maryles of Publishers Weekly, novelist
Jonathan Rosen and Professor Ruth
Wisse of Harvard University. 7
