ichigan vs. Michigan State.
The rivalry is intense no
matter what the sport, and
now it has a Jewish flavor.
For the past two school years,
students from Michigan State Hillel
and U-M Hillel have battled for the
Graham Cup. Teams have played flag
football, basketball and softball games
at campus and off-campus sites at
both schools, with victories in at least
two sports needed to secure the Cup.
U-M won the football and basketball
games last year, and the softball game
wasn't played. A determined group of
Spartans vowed to bring the Cup to
East Lansing this year, and they did.
Michigan State won the October
football game, 19-7, but lost the March
basketball game, 33-25. Everything
was on the line in last month's softball
game, played at U-M.
"We were pumped:' said MSU's
Austin Bernstein. "We took the game
very seriously. We practiced for three
weeks. We didn't want to drive to Ann
Arbor for nothing."
Michigan State won 14-0 in a
mercy-rule mismatch that ended in
the fifth inning. The Cup is now on
display at the Lester J. Morris Hillel
Jewish Student Center in East Lansing.
While winning the Cup is impor-
tant, it isn't the only reason for the
games. That's why the teams gather for
a meal, either before or after they play.
"Michigan-Michigan State is a
heated rivalry, but the get-togeth-
ers remind us that we're all friends:'
Bernstein said. "It's been nice for
Jewish students from the two schools
to get to meet each other."
Besides Bernstein, the Michigan
State softball roster included

Jacob Bishop, Jared Bristol, Juna
Cuddeback, Avi Davidoff, Brad
Gershel, Eric Lubanski, Michael
Schneider, Jason Solway and John
Wachlerz. The team was coached by
Larry Sernick, an active member of
the East Lansing Jewish community.
Don Rudick, an MSU Hillel board
member, umpired the game.
The Graham Cup was established
by Bill and Susie Graham of West
Bloomfield in honor of their daughter
Alex, who died of cancer in 1999 while
she was a student at West Bloomfield
High School.
