Treat For Tiger Fans
Baseball will be the theme at
Temple Beth El on Sunday, May 20,
when the Leo M. Franklin Archives
presents a baseball double header:
a display of baseball artifacts plus
a trip to Comerica Park for a World
Series rematch, the Detroit Tigers
vs. St. Louis Cardinals.
The Loewenstein Family Uniform
Exhibit tells the tale of a small
Tigers uniform that came into the
possession of 4-year-old Marshall
Loewenstein in 1935, who wore it
while posing with Hank Greenberg.
Since then, nine Loewenstein boys
have donned the white pants and
shirt to pose with Tigers, the last
being Jeremy Loewenstein with
outfielder Gabe Kapler in 1999.
The photos, artifacts and uni-
form will be on display 9:30-noon
at the temple, 7400 Telegraph,
Bloomfield Township, along with
a private collection of baseball
cards featuring Jewish ball players.
Religious School Director Keren
Alpert has created a scavenger
hunt to show Jewish contributions
to baseball.
For information or game tickets,
call the Leo M. Franklin Archives,
(248) 851-1100.
Jewish-Latino Camp
Detroit's Jewish and Latino commu-
nities join together this weekend for
two programs at Camp Tamarack
in Ortonville, promoting cultural
exchanges beyond "breaking bread."
The Jewish Community Relations
Council sponsors its annual Camp
Tamarack weekend for nearly
100 children and their parents
from Harms Elementary School
in Southwest Detroit. Council's
inaugural Friendship Across
Communities, a new initiative that
is a family-to-family exchange
at the camp's Butzel Conference
Center, runs concurrently during
the weekend.
Friendship Across Communities
is made possible by three fund-
ing sources: $5,000 from the
Kaufman Charitable Trust, and
$1,000 each from both the Ben
N. Teitel Trust and the Myron P.
Leven Foundation. The Harms
camping weekend is sponsored
by two grants from the Skillman
Foundation: $5,000 from Skillman's
Good Neighbors Initiative and
$5,000 from the Foundation's
President's Discretionary Fund.
