Dear
Bar , m
entering my
senior years
and I wondered
if you could of-
fer some advice on healthy aging?
Thanks, Milton.
nswer: Dear Milton, one of
the best known studies on
"successful aging" is the
John D. and Catherine T. MacAr-
thur Foundation Study of Success-
ful Aging (you may remember the
MacArthur Foundation as one of
the principal co-sponsors of Ken
Burns' highly acclaimed
Civil War series on PBS).
In it's simplest terms, the
oft-cited MacArthur Study
(undertaken in the early
1990s) can be boiled
down to the following
recommendations:
• Do your very best to
avoid disease and dis-
ability (of course, easier
said than done);
• Maintain high cognitive
and physical function;
• Stay involved with life and living.
A long-term Tufts University study
of older Japanese men found the
following risk factors can affect
living a healthy life to 85+:
• Avoid: being overweight, hyperg-
lycemia, hypertension, and high
triglyceride levels;
• Don't smoke or consume exces-
sive alcohol;
• Positive factors: high education
and having a mate.
Yes, you can make a difference.
