noticed the six-pointed star among
the symbols on the wizard's robe. The
wizard had been taken from an image
library on the Web site yahoo.com .
"I do recognize the Star of David,
but I didn't notice it," she said, explain-
ing that the ad agency had selected the
image. "I'm really sorry that we didn't
spot it. Had we spotted it, we sure as
heck wouldn't have run with it."
She said that she understands the
sensitivity over the images and doesn't
blame anyone for being upset.
"My first reaction was incredulity
that anyone would think we would
try to make religion an issue. It really
caught me off guard, but then reality
set in. We've had a lot of people who
have intentionally done terrible things
to the Jewish people. They're not wrong
to say, `People have hurt us, and people
will continue to hurt us until we make
it impossible for people to hurt us."'
"I personally, and both of us,
apologize for the oversight;' said Don
Greenwell. "It was a human mistake.
Our district has made mistakes; our
administration has made mistakes and
we've made mistakes. We had no inten-
tion to hurt or divide, and we're sorry
that we have. There is no hidden agen-
da. We're about more than putting a
wizard on a pamphlet. It is all about the
school system making improvements"
Not surprisingly those that trusted
the Greenwells before the mailing
continued to do so; and those who
doubted them felt they had even more
reason to do so.
"They [the Greenwells] want a reac-
tion. This is intended; they want this;'
said Lisa Efros of Bloomfield Hills
referring the crowd that attended the
press conference. "This is not an inno-
cent mistake. They [the Greenwells]
want to send their message both
ways," gaining both from promoting
anti-Semitism and condemning it.
"It is a tasteless cartoon but it
has no bias in it," said Dr. Isaac Barr
of Bloomfield Hills, a supporter of the
Greenwells. "The Greenwells are people
of integrity. They have no shade of anti-
Semitism, no shade of discrimination.
Their effort is not about the Jewish
community; what they care about are
all the citizens of the community:'
American Jewish Committee board
member Jonathan Frank of Bloomfield

Star Origins

Why would a wizard's robe have
a Jewish star on it?
According to the Encyclopedia
Judaica, the hexagram, which
is identical to the Magen David
(Shield of David), became preva-
lent as a magical sign in the
early Middle Ages. It was used
as a decoration in many religions
especially Islam, where
it was known as the
Shield of Solomon,
and as a universal
symbol of magic.
Jews used it along
with others, and it
wasn't until the
19th century
that it became
a distinctive
Jewish symbol
used on ritual
objects and in
other ways.
