Herod's Tomb Found
Jerusalem/JTA
Israeli archaeologists
have discovered the tomb of the bibli-
cal King Herod. The Hebrew University
of Jerusalem announced Tuesday that
researchers had located the resting place
of the first century BCE monarch at
Herodium, a West Bank hill where one
of Herod's palaces once stood.
Herod is best remembered by Jews
for his ambitious construction work in
Roman-ruled Judea, and to Christians
for the New Testament account of how
he ordered the slaughter of male chil-
dren in Bethlehem to head off the arriv-
al of a messiah who might challenge his
reign. Jesus, according to the Book of
Matthew, survived the slaughter because
his parents took refuge in Egypt.
Herod's projects included the expan-
sion of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

The steering committee will select a
new president on June 10. Likely can-

the chairman of the WJC executive, and
Ronald Lauder, the philanthropist and
president of the Jewish National Fund.
Sarkozy Takes Presidency
Paris/JTA Nicolas Sarkozy, "by far the
most pro-Israeli French presidential fig-
ure Israel could have hoped for" accord-
ing to a political analyst, won the runoff
election. He will take office May 16.
In numbers not seen since 1974, 85
percent of French voters turned out, fol-
lowing a hard-fought campaign pitting
the conservative Sarkozy against the
liberal Segolene Royal, who conceded
defeat soon after the polls closed.
Many French Jews were seen as back-
ing Sarkozy, known as an American-
style law-and-order politician, for his
hard line against Muslim unrest in
France, including anti-Semitic attacks.
