S usan and Gary Bernett, a wife-husband sculpting team based in Montreal, show biblical scenes carved into granite and marble at Fine Art at the Village, running May 19-20 in Rochester Hills. The couple, who work with highly- polished surfaces, etch away the background to present religious sub- jects as well as scenes from nature and everyday life. "Each piece gives careful attention to details." Bernett, married for 13 years, learned his craft through family members, who were artists and monument makers. His wife also learned early artistic skills from family members, a grandmother specializing in portrait painting and a mother working with metals and ceramics. "My focus this year is on women in the Bible," says Susan Bernett, 47, who studied with Canadian artist Stanley Lewis and attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, McGill University in Canada and the Putney School of Art and Design in England. "The religious work comes from my heart." The Bernetts, who often travel to art shows with their four children, point out that their projects can be displayed indoors or outdoors because of the strength of their materials. They recently began to work with sculptural representations of corporate logos. "We have to do a lot of the work in studios outside our home," Gary Bernett explains. "That's because of the dust that results from our processes." — Suzanne Chessler Birmingham Fine Art Festival Liberty Fest Fine Art & Fine Craft Show May 12-13 Shain Park (248) 644-0866 June 16-17 Heritage Park, Canton (734) 394-5460 Fine Art at the Village Clay and Glass Festival May 19-20 Village of Rochester Hills, Walton at Adams (248) 689-8734 and Taste of Royal Oak June 16-17 Washington St. in Downtown Royal Oak www.downtownroyaloak.org East Lansing Art Festival May 19-20 Downtown East Lansing (517) 319-6804 Northville Art in the Sun June 16-17 Downtown Northville (248) 349-7640 Art on the Avenue June 2-3 Monroe Street, Dearborn (313) 943-3095 Lathrup Village Art in the Park - - - June 23-24 Behind City Hall (248) 557-2600 Detroit Festival of the Arts June 8-10 Detroit's Cultural Center (313) 577-5088 Art in the Woods Art From the Heart of Livonia June 23-24 Area across the street from Berkley High School (248) 543-9720 Women of Bloomfield Art & Craft Show June 29-30 and July 1 Downtown Mount Clemens (586) 913-1919 Strawberry Festival of Arts & Crafts July 4-8 New Center Area (313) 872-0188 June 9-10 City Hall Grounds (734) 466-2540 June 13 First United Methodist Church, Birmingham (248) 816-8345 June 15-17 Trinity Episcopal Church, Belleville (734) 699-3361 Stars and Stripes Festival CityFest Art Fairs on page 42 May 3 k 2007 39
