Emanu-El "lights up" Earth Day.

Don Cohen
Special to the Jewish News

E

very day is Earth Day at Oak
Park's Temple Emanu-El,
but April 22 gave its Social
Action Committee a chance to spread
the word to congregants and the
community.
"It's for my grandchildren and
my grandchildren's grandchildren,"
explained Bea Sacks of Huntington
Woods, who co-chairs the committee
together with Alison Diez of Royal Oak.
"It's so they can live in a world with
clean air and clean water."
To that end, Emanu-El has begun
a recycling program for paper, plastic
and metal that they urge others to
replicate in their homes.
It also has begun to install CFL
(compact fluorescent) bulbs in the
temple.
The bulbs use up to 75 percent less
energy and last longer, more than
making up for the bulbs' higher initial
cost.
The Sunday morning event featured
speakers and composting and recy-
cling displays. CFL bulbs were for sale.
"Judaism reminds us over and over
again that we are stewards of God's
creation," Rabbi Joseph Klein said.
Sacks says Emanu-El also is work-
ing with its children, who visited
the displays and received packets of
seeds.

"It's going to be their world;' she
said.
"It's the children who are going to
tell their parents."
Sacks said they are working with
the religious school to ensure the
environment is part of the curriculum
and hopes to develop a Web site for
teachers and students.
