The group is free and will take place 7-8:30 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays, May 3-31. Educators Honored Honoring two Jewish educators through the Emery and Diane Klein Excellence in Education Endowment Fund, Federation's Alliance for Jewish Education has awarded stipends to Leah Gawel of Congregation Shir Tikvah in Troy and Elkie Silverstein of Beth Jacob School for Girls in Oak Park. Longtime supporters of Jewish edu- cation, the Kleins established the award last year to "recognize the dedication and creativity of those teachers who demonstrate a love of Jewish learning and bring their talents and energy to the classroom:' The awards offer scholar- ships for conventions of the Conference on Alternatives in Jewish Education (CAJE) or the Torah U'Mesorah: National Society for Hebrew Day. Gawel of Novi, who will attend CAJE, is a pre-kindergarten teacher and lead- er of Tikvah Tots, a program for young children and their families. Silverstein of Southfield, who will attend the Torah U'Mesorah conven- tion, is completing her 10th year as a Jewish studies teacher at Beth Jacob's junior high division. Advocates Gather Alzheimer advocates will gather in Lansing on Wednesday, May 9, to take part in the Alzheimer's Association's fifth annual Legislative Day. The daylong event will begin at 10 a.m. with a program on the steps of the Michigan State Capitol. Alzheimer's Association staff and volunteers then will meet with legislators to dis- cuss public policy issues impacting Alzheimer's, highlighting the need for increased dementia training for direct care and urging funding for Alzheimer's support programs.
