nswer: Dear Anita, Health
coaching is a fairly new
and evolving field that,
generally speaking, focuses on
giving people the information they
need to make informed decisions
about leading healthful lives.

A more exact definition might be,
"the practice of health education
and health promotion within a
coaching context to enhance well
being and to facilitate the achieve-
1 ment of health-related goals."

ues-
tion:
Dear
Bar , cently,
I heard some-
one mention
"health coach-
ing." What
exactly is "health coaching" and
how might it help me? Anita.

Health coaching is not
disease assessment or treat-
ment, but rather education-
al and motivational advice
to help clients develop
healthful behaviors on
their own.

Unfortunately, the term
"health coach" is widely
used (and sometimes
/ abused) and doesn't cur-
rently require credentials or
guarantee the quality of
the health advice given. At a time
when people are looking for other,
cost-effective methods of health
maintenance, health coaching (ad-
ministered professionally) can be a
viable adjunct/alternative.

Registered dietitians and licensed
nutritionists are, typically, well-
qualified to become effective
health coaches.
