Attending Orchard Lake Middle School in West Bloomfield, Becca felt it very meaningful to volunteer at Gleaners Food Bank as one of her mitzvah projects. Amanda Morgan Shapiro will be called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Friday, April 27, at Temple Shir Shalom. She is the daughter Shapiro of MaryAnn and Morris Shapiro of Novi and the sister of Mia (Max), Myles and Mason. Proud grandparents are Irene Vengen and Mary Lee and Harry Lind. She is also the grand- daughter of late Albert Shapiro and the late Michael Vengen. Amanda is in the seventh grade at Geisler Middle School in Walled Lake. Her favorite mitzvah project was assisting in the kindergarten class at Shir Shalom's Sunday school. Emily Erin Sitron (Rifka Yaffa) was called to the Torah as a bat mitzvah on Saturday, April 21, at Congregation Beth Ahm. Participating in the ceremony Sitron were her proud par- ents, Susan and Bruce Sitron, and her older sister Hayley. Emily is the grand- daughter of the late Mildred and the late Sidney Wise, the late Ruth and the late Harold Sitron. Emily is a student at Orchard Lake Middle School in West Bloomfield. Her most meaningful mitzvah project was volunteering at Yad Ezra in Berkley. Ryan Douglas Stern celebrated his bar mitzvah as he led the congregation at Temple Israel during services Saturday, April 21. His parents are Ruth Stern and Owen Stern and his sister is Haley. Sharing in the sim- chah were his grandparents Greta and Sam Greene. He is also the grandchild of the late Edith and the late Herman Stern. Matthew Harris Sternberg of Bloomfield Township will be celebrating his bar mitzvah on Saturday, April 28, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek Sternberg Southfield. He is the son of Robin and Jeffrey Sternberg, brother of Joshua and Rebecca and grandson of Allen and Phyllis Seel and Robert and Judith Sternberg. Matthew attends Birmingham Covington School. He organized a can drive for his mitzvah project. Parenting Course The Florence Melton Adult Mini- School and its Jewish Parent Education Program will be featured in a free "Taste of PEP " session 9:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Hillel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit. PEP instructor Jordana Weiss will teach the sample class; Mini-School Director Judy Loebl will answer ques- tions. Melton PEP is a two-year, text- based curriculum includes classes on Jewish holidays and life cycles; Jewish thought and beliefs; ethics of Jewish living; and Jewish history. Melton PEP will be offered at Hillel Day School 9:30-11:45 a.m. Wednesday mornings, beginning Oct. 10. It is open to Jewish parents with newborn through elementary school- age children.
