Arts & Entertainment THE BEST OF EVERYTHING Deli Laughs Miami Beach's finest funnymen were fed by Harvey Bloom. p OTPOURRI When Jackie Mason appears at Andiamo Celebrity Room in Warren, June 15 and 16, Harvey Bloom wonders if he'll come to the Deli Basket at Vineyards on Northwestern Highway, Farmington Hills, where Harvey is deli manager, to get an "Oy Vey Sandwich" like the one Mason loved when Harvey man- aged the former Wolfie's Deli-Restaurant on Collins and Lincoln Blvd. in Miami Beach ... It is now a Walgreen's, but is always remembered for the celebrities who went there ... Mason's Oy Vey Sandwich, says Harvey, was corned beef, pastrami, chopped liver, Russian dressing and sour pickles (here called old dills.) Don Rickles, who comes to Andiamo, Sept. 28 and 29, had a sandwich at Wolfie's called "The Big Insult;' an overstuffed four-decker that originally came with two meats, but Rickles insisted on four meats, says Harvey, made with corned beef, pas- trami, turkey and roast beef. Benny Youngman wanted something he said nobody else in Florida had ... A Dinty Moore, which in Florida then was thought of only as a can of soup, says Harvey, who made the Dinty Moore sand- wich at Wolfie's as we have always known it here in the Detroit area. Another customer, says Harvey, char- acter actor Lou Jacobi, borrowed a pencil from Harvey's wife-server at Wolfie's, and after writing on a piece of paper, said, "Give this to your husband" ... On it, Jacobi listed everything he wanted on a sandwich, salami, brisket of beef, red peppers, corned beef, pickle sliced very thin, black olives, a lot of mustard ... and then wrote, "Give it to someone else to eat. I'm on a diet." When Harvey asked comic Dick Shawn what kind of sand- wich he would like named after him, Shawn said, "herring on a bagel;' and he wasn't kidding, says Harvey. "I made only one herring on a bagel sandwich during all the time I managed at Wolfie's, and it was for Dick Shawn, who never ate another one:' Harvey had gone to Florida 31 years ago since leaving Detroit in 1975, and his Bloom's Kosher Catering at Ahavis Achim and B'nai David synagogues ... He man- aged Marshall-Majors Deli in South Miami and Wolfie's before opening his own City Deli in North Miami and Detroit Deli in Margate, among others. LATEST WORD is that the new Zoe's House of Pancakes, opening at the former Mr. Greek locale in Orchard Mall, West Bloomfield, will be another Leo's Coney Island-run operation. NICE TO SEE that Roma Cafe's pres- ent owner, Janet Sossi Belcoure, has still made very few, if any, changes to Detroit's oldest Italian restaurant, since taking over some time back ... Same menu, decor, warmth, good food and service ... Longtime servers like Ed Bapachen, Harry Floros, David Astrada, etc., con- tinue to bring relaxed smiles with their personable, efficient and highly knowl- edgeable ways to provide much customer satisfaction. ITS FORMER CHEF, Alex Ortiz, is back at Commerce Grille, Union Lake Road, Commerce Township ... He's the kitchen head whose preparations drew a lot of acclaim prior to his leaving because of illness at home. THIS AUGUST WILL be the fifth anniversary of owners Shaw and Helen Ng taking over Golden Phoenix in Sugar Tree, Orchard Lake Road north of Maple, West Bloomfield ... They have since gained much popular- ity with a large and varied menu for sit-down Chinese dining satisfaction after previously mak- ing many friends for 10 years at their China Express in Sylvan Lake ... Golden Phoenix is probably the only restaurant I know of that gives a choice of seven ice cream flavors for dessert with all din- ners ... Can't think of any in past years, either, that had so many. ITS MUSICAL director is Alexander Zonjic ... and Pi restaurant, the former Excalibur locale on Northwestern highway and Franklin Road in Southfield, joins the jazz comeback with rhythm combos on Friday and Saturday evenings.
