27 and on Shabbat morning and after-

rofessor Eisen will speak to the Adat

noon, April 28. Rabbi Daniel Nevins,
future dean of the JTS Rabbinical School,
will introduce Professor Eisen at a dinner
program on Friday, beginning at 8 p.m. At that time our dis-
tinguished guest will discuss The Meaning of Mitzvah:
Reclaiming the Core Cl'ocrirnitment of Judaism.
The following morning Professor Eisen will give the
Shabbat sermon. Following Kiddush he will offer an interac-
tive discussion: New Directions for the Conservative

Professor Eisen is one of the world's foremost experts
on American Judaism, He has worked closely for the past
twenty years with synagogue and Federation leadership
around the country to analyze and address the issues of
Jewish identity, the revitalization of Jewish tradition, and
the redefinition of the American Jewish community. He is a
passionate advocate of strengthening the connection
between American Jews and Israel.
Professor Eisen's recent publications include a person-
al essay, Taking Hold of Torah: Jewish Commitment and
Community in America, a historical work about the origins of
contemporary dilemmas, entitled Rethinking Modern
Judaism: Ritual, Commandment, Community, and The Jew
Within: Self, Family and Community in America, co authored
with sociologist Steven M. Cohen, which examines the mean-
ings of Judaism and Jewish belonging to contemporary
American Jews. He is currently at work on a book that
probes new possibilities for the meaning of Zionism.
Professor Eisen will leave his position at Stanford
University as the Koshland Professor of Jewish
Casual

role at JTS on July 1.
