P HOTO BY ANG • member of the tribe Three years ago, LISA J. SMITH of Troy took a gift r04, atit she had shared with fam- ily and friends and went public. The 38-year-old stay-at-home wife and mother of two with a B.A. in psychology and a back- ground in sales was going through a rough time. Her son had been diagnosed with high-functioning autism, and she had hit rock bottom. "I said to God, 'Do with me what you want.' That's when my gift exploded," she recalls. "That was when I knew I was meant to guide and heal people the way I had been." Today, during individual sessions at her Bingham Farms office and in phone calls around the country, during private group round tables and interactive public "Spirit Live!" events (the next one is May 16; call 248-594-3431 for details), Smith helps clients heal. She does life coaching through her energy work, channeling messages from Spirit and sharing the words of loved ones who have passed, as well as of spirit guides and masters — her own and those of her clients. "Spirit," she explains, is an all-encompassing concept for what some call "God, Universe, Source — whatever you call your Creator. Spirit is everything, everywhere and in everybody. We are Spirit. I read energy, and it's all part of One energy. "My favorite thing is when people say to me, 'Lisa, you changed my life' I want all the love and energy to go out the door with each person so they can touch the lives of those they meet," she says. Her dream is to eventually find a way to spread Spirit's word to millions and help guide their hearts to a place of healing, much like the good work done by Oprah Winfrey, one of the people she most admires. — Gail Zimmerman QUESTIONS Who's thinking what WHAT BOOK, CD, MOVIE OR OTHER MEDIA ARE YOU LONGING TO SHARE? I recommend Conversations with God (Books I, II and III) by Neale Donald Walsch, a man who hit rock bottom, had nowhere to go and one day was guided to start writing about and conversing with God. The books are a series of questions and answers that let people know that God is funny, witty, non- judgmental and pure delight. I also suggest the Dan Millman film Peaceful Warrior, about a college student who meets up with a man who teaches him the truths about why we're here and how to live the best life possible. 2 IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH WITH ONE BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL JEWISH FIGURE, WHO WOULD IT BE? It would be Jesus, a Jewish man who taught love, compassion, oneness and forgiveness. Who better to share a bagel and cream cheese with? I was raised by a Jewish mother and a Roman Catholic father in a Jewish area of Southfield. I wasn't formally taught either religion. I am certainly not a Messianic Jew, Michigan Cosmetic Surgery Center Dr. Michael Gray announces the Grand Opening of and why? but I would say that my belief system tran- scends all religions. 3 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD? When I think of Jewish food, I think of my grandmother's brisket and matzah-ball soup. I discovered kugel on my own. WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
