and clothing in terror attacks.
HRW's blatantly false reports
during last summer's war with
Hezbollah further lower this organi-
zation's credibility.
In many places, the language of
the State Department report imitates
the rhetoric of the anti-Israel NGO
network. Atomic spy Mordechai
Vanunu is incorrectly termed a
"whistleblower, adopting the term
used by Amnesty International and
other groups. A "whistleblower"
reveals illegal behavior by oth-
ers, while Vanunu acted illegally in
revealing national security data.
Such actions are illegal under U.S.
law; the report's characterization
reflects the double standards applied
to Israel that have been copied from
NGOs.
These and other flaws in this
report do not mean that Israel
should be immune from criticism for
real violations of human rights when
they occur.
In responding to terror, Israelis,
Americans and others make mis-
takes and should be held account-
able. But this objective is inconsistent
with the exploitation of human
rights for demonization and political
warfare by politicized NGOs; the U.S.
State Department should not be part
of this process.

Gerald Steinberg is executive director of

NGO Monitor and heads the program on

conflict management at Israel's Bar-Ilan

University.

Answering

Israel's Critics

The Charge
Israel's opponents in America
charge that Israel and American
Jewish groups that support the
Jewish state enforce a general
philosophy that Jews should not
criticize Israel.

The Answer
A recent survey of Israelis by the
Reform movement revealed that
more than half of Israeli Jews
support the right of diaspora Jews
to criticize Israel on particular
issues.

one Survivor Remembers

Gerda Klein's account of living through the Holocaust is documented in
her autobiography, All But My Life, in print for 46 years in 55 editions.
The book depicts her view of the dark years of the Holocaust, a
progression that ultimately led to her liberation from a death march by
her future husband, Kurt Klein, an American intelligence officer. The
Klein's last book together was The Hours After: Letters of Love and
Longing In War's Aftermath, a follow up to All But My Life. The Hours
After contains actual correspondence between Gerda and Kurt Klein
following the war. Gerda's more recent book, A Boring Evening at
Home (2004) is a collection of uplifting stories and memories that drive
home the importance of friends, family and love.
