Taubman Memoir

Prominent Bloomfield Hills busi-
nessman and philanthropist A.
Alfred Taubman has written a
memoir that will be published next
month under the title Threshold
Resistance: The Extraordinary
Career of a Luxury Retailing Pioneer
(Harper Business; $24.95). It goes
on sale April
10. In his book,
Taubman
chronicles
how a dyslexic
Jewish kid
from Detroit
A. Alfred Taubman
grew up to be
a billionaire retailing giant, respect-
ed philanthropist and, at age 78, a
federal prisoner.
Taubman, formerly the head of
Sotheby's auction house, was con-
victed in 2002 of being involved
in a price-fixing scheme with rival
Christie's auction house and spent
almost a year in jail.
In his book, he charges that he
was the victim of overzealous pros-
ecutors who let the guilty parties
go free in return for false testimony
against him.
He told Avenue magazine he

hydrate Passover recipes. Low-carb
chicken soup, fat-free matzah balls
and low-carb, reduced fat, light-as-air
sponge cake are among the choices.

• The Ten
Commandments:
The Musical,
now out on DVD
(BCBG Max Azria
Entertainment;
$19.99), features
Val Kilmer as
Moses and serves
as a good introduction to the narra-
tive of the seder. The pop-rock filmed
musical version of a theatrical spec-
tacle that played for two years at the
Kodak Theatre in Hollywood adheres
to the biblical story of the Exodus and
its message of faith and liberation. It
features an original score by Patrick
Leonard with lyrics by Maribeth
Derry. I I

might have made a mistake when
he listened to his lawyers' advice
and didn't call legendary civil rights
activist Rosa Parks as a character
witness (Parks wanted to be a wit-
ness).
Taubman supported Parks for
the last 12 years of her life — after
a robber broke into her home and
beat her up. Taubman told Avenue
magazine, "She lived in a very
rough neighborhood in Detroit. I
moved her into an apartment build-
ing (the Riverfront Apartments)
that I owned to make sure that she
was secure."
He'll participate in a discussion
and book signing for Threshold
Resistance 7 p.m. Wednesday, April
18, at Borders Downtown Ann Arbor,
612 E. Liberty; (734) 668-7652. He
also is scheduled to promote the
book 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at
Barnes & Noble, 2800 Rochester
Road, in Rochester Hills; (248) 853-
9855.
