Seattle/JTA
The Jewish Federation
of Greater Seattle has returned to its
old building after a shooting spree
last summer forced it out. The group
moved back into the building in a cer-
emony Sunday.
The building had been remodeled
since July 28, when a gunman killed
federation worker Pam Waechter and
wounded five others. The $1.1 million
renovation includes improved security,
more bright, open spaces and a large
picture of Waechter. The shooting site
was turned into conference rooms.
The decision to move back was not
an easy one, federation member Robin
Boehler told KomoTv.com. "Some
people felt that we should move to
another location. Others thought it
was important to come back. This is
our space and we should move back
into it',' she said.

in Jerusalem, Budapest and Buenos
Aires, are not expected to follow suit.

Jews Take On Play
Seattle/JTA
Seattle Jews are provid-
ing the public with information to
balance the local production of a con-
troversial play about a pro-Palestinian
activist's death.
My Name is Rachel Corrie, which
opened March 15, is a one-woman
show chronicling the life of Corrie, a
young woman from Washington state
who volunteered in Gaza with the
International Solidarity Movement.
Since her death in 2003 — she was
crushed by an Israeli army bulldozer
as she tried to prevent it from search-
ing for arms-smuggling tunnels
— she has become a martyr-like fig-
ure among Palestinian supporters and
some in the anti-Israel community.
The Jerusalem Post reported
Monday that instead of protesting the
play's run, the Seattle community and
federation attempted to work with the
Seattle Repertory Theater to provide
viewers with background for the play.
They have taken out ads in the playbill,
which promote an informational Web
site, www.rachelcorriefacts.org.

Israel President
Moshe Katsav is to be interrogated
again in his sexual misconduct case.
Israeli Attorney General Menachem

Mazuz approved the move Monday in
light of new information in the case
against the suspended president.
Katsav, who faces possible charges
of rape and other sexual offenses,
was given a three-month suspension
by the Knesset House Committee.
He has denied all wrongdoing, and
vowed to step down from his position
if indicted. A hearing that will help
decide whether to indict him has been
set for May.

Olmert Backs Peres

Jerusalem/JTA
Ehud Olmert said
he backed Shimon Peres for the Israeli
presidency despite their differences
over the Lebanon war. The prime min-
ister moved Sunday to rebut media
reports suggesting that, after it was
revealed that Peres told a war inquiry
commission that he disagreed with
the scale of Israel's offensive against
Hezbollah, he would no longer have
the governing Kadima Party's support
for his presidential bid.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Two leading political scientists
are now writing a book, extending
their controversial argument made
in a paper last year that the domes-
tic pro-Israel lobby bends U.S.
foreign policy disproportionately in
favor of Israel. Professors Stephen
Walt and John Mearsheimer argue
that the pro-Israel lobby distorts
foreign policy through its influence
on academia, the media and think
tanks, and promoted going to war
with Iraq in 2003.

The Answer
AIPAC and others involved in
pro-Israel lobbying are simply,
but effectively exercising political
activism in this American democ-
racy Even the Arab League, a part
of the anti-Israel lobby, is active
on Capitol Hill and was founded to
oppose Israel's creation and focus
on anti-Israel activities. Critics of
Walt and Mearsheimer say that the
professors' approach to the Middle
East wildly blames a large Jewish
conspiracy for America's policies
toward Israel and is actually hin-
dering productive dialogue and
progress toward peace.
