History Classes

Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education and the Hyman and
Sonia Blumenstein Outreach
Institute of the Sarah and Morris
Tugman Bais Chabad Torah Center
will host a six-part series titled
"Flashbacks in Jewish History"
The classes will be 7:30-9 p.m.
Tuesday evenings, starting April
17, at the Max Fisher Federation
Building in Bloomfield Township.
The classes, ranging from "The
Golden Age in Moslem Spain" to
"the Revival of European Jewry,"
will be taught by Mrs. Chaya Sarah
Silberberg. There is a fee for the
course, which was created by the
Rohr Jewish Learning Institute.
The Torah Center will also hold
a seven-week course, "Opening the
Tanya," 10:30 a.m. Sundays, begin-
ning April 15, and Wednesdays,
beginning April 18, at the Torah
Center, 5595 W. Maple, West
Bloomfield. The course will explore
and offer solutions to the dilem-
mas of the human soul by probing
the root causes of its struggles. The
class will focus on Tanya, a classic
work on Kabbalah with a commen-
tary from Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz.
The class will be taught by Rabbi
Elimelech Sliberberg.

Cantor Visits T'chiyah

Cantor Suzanne Volkman Skloot
of New York will serve as cantor at
Congregation T'chiyah during a
special Shabbat weekend April 6-7.
Skloot, an ordained cantor from
the Academy for Jewish Religion in
Riverdale, will offer an interactive
presentation at 7:30 p.m. Friday,
April 6, as well as lead a Passover
Shabbat service 10 a.m. April 7.
Both events will be in the David
and Miriam Mondry Building,
15000 W. 10 Mile Road, Oak Park
Cantor Skloot will speak on the
sociological and historical influ-
ences of music in contemporary
synagogue services, including the
birth of the State of Israel, the civil
rights movement, American folk
music and other influences.
Her Shabbat service will feature
music by Shlomo Carlebach and
Debbie Friedman and a portion of
the "Song of Songs:' the traditional
segment before the Torah reading
on Passover.
