version of the "Jerusalem of Gold" that
I had so often taken for granted. But
for a good part of the mission, we were
privileged to meet those special people
and groups who have dedicated energy
and passion to restoring the luster to
every part of Jerusalem and Israel.
Every day, these people roll up their
sleeves to do the hard work necessary
to envision and actually work toward
the ideal that we as visitors imagine.
Here are just a few of their inspiring
stories:
• Community Advocacy of South
Katamon: In that impoverished
neighborhood in southern Jerusalem,
a small group operates a storefront
and a co-op food pantry whose clients
also gain a sense of self-worth by help-
ing to stock the shelves. One does not
receive from this pantry without also
contributing time and effort.
•Jaffa Institute: We played video
games with the children of Ethiopian
immigrants — imagine these kids'
parents had never seen an airplane, yet
they were showing us how they use a
computer! The education of the next
generation is key to the fight against
hunger. As Augie said, "These children
are living in poverty — yet they bring
us so much joy!"
• Project Leket (gleaning) Table To
Table Food Rescue: In Israel, the gov-
ernment subsidizes irrigation to allow
farmers to grow crops, but then tens of
thousands of tons of surplus crops are
destroyed. Table To Table brings volun-
teers to the fields filled with surplus so
this source of food can be gleaned for
those in need. This was a particularly

moving experience for our Detroit-
based Gleaners representative. Augie
again spoke with wonder and appre-
ciation: "Being a Gleaner, following the
lessons of the Bible regarding glean-
ing, and then being in the Holy Land,
actually gleaning was so emotional, so
fantastic ..."
In each of these efforts and oth-
ers, we saw that the work supported
by Mazon throughout Israel and the
world is not in vain — that we can
end food insecurity. These individu-
als and groups provide the care and
compassion that can gradually but
surely realize our vision and dream of
a "Jerusalem of Gold," a land flowing
with milk and honey.
They are able to see where work
must be done — and to sustain the
hope that, through Mazon and its con-
stituent agencies, we will succeed in
curing hunger in the Land of Israel.

Eric Yanoff is a rabbi at Congregation

Shaarey Zedek in Oakland County.
