Learning To Donate
Dr. Jeffrey Devries of West Bloomfield spoke to Boy Scout Troop 364 at
Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills March 11 about the impor-
tance of human organ donation. Some 90,000 Americans, including 3,000
Michigan residents, are waiting for organ transplants. Sixteen people die
every day because the demand for exceeds the supply. Michigan partners
with Gift of Life Michigan. Residents can sign up to donate organs when
applying for a state ID card or driver's license. For an $18 donation, the
Halachic Organ Donor Society at www.hods.org provides a photo ID
donor card and database registration for those 18 or older.

Laura Nicole Walker's "Raise Your Glass To Freedom — A High Tea for Darfur
Relief" fundraiser held at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham raised $3,388.
Proceeds from the Feb. 25 event will aid victims of the war-torn African region
of Darfur via food, medicine and shelter.
The civil war between the government and rebel forces in western Sudan has
taken at least 400,000 lives over the past three years. The fighting has forced 2
million civilians to flee their homes. They now live in displaced-persons camps
in Sudan or neighboring Chad. International relief has provided lifelines for 3.5
million Sudanese of all ages. Hunger, homelessness and despair remain perva-
sive.

"I am so impressed with how many people from the community came forth
with open arms to show their support to end the genocide in Sudan," said
Walker, 27, an Oakland County publishing company account manager and a
music teacher at Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills.

In an attempt to remedy Passover's reputation as a fattening-food holiday, Tnuva
