Interfaith Dialogue
Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood
and WISDOM (Women's Interfaith
Solutions for Dialogue and Outreach
in Metro Detroit) are sponsoring an
Education Day Sunday, March 25, that
will bring Jewish and Muslim women
together in prayer and dialogue.
This program will take place at the
Muslim Unity Center, 1830 W. Square
Lake Road in Bloomfield Hills, starting
at 11:45 a.m. with a tour of the mosque
and a presentation. The women will
share a Middle Eastern vegetarian
lunch before adjourning to the prayer
hall where the Jewish women will
observe Muslim women in prayer. The
visit will end with dialogue and a ques-
tion and answer session.
Cost is $15. Carpools are available.
Women are asked to bring head scarves
and to be aware that they will need to
remove their shoes in the prayer hall.

Horrors Of Darfur
Congregation Beth Shalom will host
Simon Deng Monday, April 16, at 7
p.m. Deng is a former child slave in the
Sudan who made an escape and came
to the United States. He will talk of his
experience and what can be done to
help end the genocide in Darfur.
There is no charge for the program.

honor leaders. Sidney Blackman and Dr.
Linda Bolton Blackman (Congregation
Beth Ahm), Lois Shiffman and the
late Dr. Milton Shiffman (Adat Shalom

will receive the
Jewish Theological
Seminary of
America Shin Award
April 26.
Beth Ahm
The Shiffmans
will honor the
Blackmans at a
Friday night dinner on March 23, fol-
lowing services. Sidney served as presi-
dent of Beth Ahm 2002-2004. Linda
has served as director of Beth Ahm's
youth programming. She taught Israeli
song and dance at Beth Tephliath
Moses for 34 years and was involved
with its sisterhood.
Adat Shalom will honor the
Shiffmans during Shabbat services on
March 24. Lois was a teacher for many
years and co-owned a dress shop. She
has been involved with Jewish Family
Service, Jewish Women's Foundation of
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, Hadassah, National Council of
Jewish Women, B'nai B'rith and Jewish
National Fund. Milton held a specialty
in surgery and was also a businessman.
He served on the boards of Federation,
Jewish National Fund and Bar-Ilan
University, which awarded him an hon-
orary doctorate.
B'nai Moshe will pay tribute to the
Ungars on Saturday, March 24, during
services. Sharlene is executive director
of the shul and has been vice presi-
dent and secretary. She also served as
president of the Michigan Region of
the United Synagogue for Conservative
Judaism. Seymour retired in 2002 after
a career as a sales representative. He
has served as chair of the synagogue's
ritual committee.

Rabbi Bennett Honored
Temple Israel will host a celebration
of Rabbi Joshua Bennett's 13th (bar
mitzvah) year at the temple on Friday,
March 23.
The celebration
will include a dinner
at 6 p.m. followed
by Shabbat services
at 8. Services will
include past and
present members of
AA
the Youth Federation
Rabbi Bennett
of Temple Israel and
the Teen T'fillah Team.
Rabbi Bennett has been at the
temple since his ordination from
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion in 1994. He has focused
on Jewish youth. He served five years
as the rabbinic dean of the Michigan
Region of the North American
Federation of Temple Youth. He is
chair of the Central Conference of
American Rabbis youth committee
and is involved with the implementa-
tion of the Clergy Track for the North
American Federation of Temple Youth
Convention.
